Tracking the car updates for 2024

Aston Martin Formula 1 design office

With the season coming to an end, let’s take a look back at the updates each team introduced over the season.

At every race, teams are required to submit their updates of all major bodywork or aerodynamical surfaces to the FIA prior to the race weekend, which is how we can keep up with what exactly has been updated.

I’ve taken a look at the documents from each race, and tallied up the results.

Disclaimer: I’m only looking at the number of updates teams have introduced over the season so far. Not how effective an update is or the size of the updates themselves. It can be everything from a completely new part, to a slight alteration to the existing design.

Over the season so far, a grand total of 406 updates have been reported by the teams to the FIA. Out of those 406, McLaren has submitted the most updates at 51, with Williams coming in with the fewest updates at only 25.

Here’s the breakdown of total updates per team:

TeamUpdates
McLaren51
Aston Martin48
VCARB47
Sauber45
Red Bull44
Haas41
Ferrari39
Mercedes37
Alpine29
Williams25
Total406

The most updated part across the grid has been the rear wings, with 51 updates. It’s closely followed by front wings which have had 48 updates.

McLaren loved updating their beam wing so much, that they did so on 13 occasions – almost three times as many as 2nd place Aston Martin and Sauber, who updated their beam wings 5 times each. Ferrari only updated theirs once.

Only the beam wing, coke/engine cover, floor body, front wing and rear wing have been updated by all teams on the grid.

Ferrari is the only team to not have updated their front or rear corner. Every other team has updated both at least once.

Williams is the only team to not have updated their floor edge.

If we break it down by team and part updated, this is what is looks like:

Saudi Arabian GP (R2)Beam wingA trim to the trailing edge of the wing to reduce the chord length.
Front cornerA smaller exit for the front brake duct is available. This reduces the exit area relative to the version used in Bahrain.
Australian GP (R3)Rear cornerThe exit scoop of the rear brake duct has changed in size. The length, position and camber of the winglet cluster that sits below the exit are all subtlely, and sympathetically, updated so that the whole system works correctly together.
Japanese GP (R4)Front wing endplateThe rearmost 2 elements are reprofiled and their junction with the endplate is heavily modified
Rear wingThis rear wing has smaller upper elements
Beam wingThe new beam wing has a small area than the previous version
Chinese GP (R5)HaloThe geometry of the forward part of the HALO shroud is updated
Miami GP (R6)Front wingThere is a new option to trim the trailing edge of the rearward element of the front wing cascade. This simply makes the chord shorter. There is a further option to modify the upper surface of the same trailing edge region by fitting a small packer
Emilia Romagna GP (R7)Floor bodyThere are no geometric differences to the aerodynamic surfaces but the laminate has been changed to reduce the mass of the floor
Monaco GP (R8)Rear wingA new high downforce rear wing is available at this event. The upper elements have a larger area, particularly at the outboard region of the mainplane
Beam wingA new high downforce beam wing accompanies the new upper elements. The difference are subtle but are designed to compliment the increased loading of the upper elements. It has a longer chord and a higher angle of attack than the medium downforce version that has run previously
Front cornerLarger front brake duct scoop exits are available to increase front brake and caliper cooing if required. Alternative internal ducting options are also available to trade disc and caliper cooling as required
Canadian GP (R9)Front suspensionA shorter steering arm is available for this event

DiffuserThe diffuser is also new with subtle reprofiling of some of the key features
Sidepod inletThe sidepod inlet geometry is updated. The upper surface is now longer than the lower surface, creating a larger ‘deck’ alongside the cockpit opening
Coke/Engine coverThe main sidepod region is a new geometry, which compliments the revised sidepod inlet and floor geometries. The gully in the sidepod is less aggressive initially giving a longer forward deck, and the top body is now wider at the bottom edge. The cooling louvres and upper top body are unchanged
Central air intakeThe main roll hoop geometry is revised, and the internal ducting and external aero surfaces are reprofiled to suit.
Italian GP (R16)Front wing endplatePart of the trailing edge of the front wing endplate is removed and the dive plane is reoriented.
Front wingA smaller and reprofiled rearward flap for the front wing is available
Rear wingAn optional trim is available to the rear wing upper flap. This reduces the chord length of the flap

panels, and chassis leg fairings compliment the revised leg geometries
