It’s been an absolute pleasure being your guest editor for the past three editions of Race Week Recap.

I hope you all enjoyed your “Motorsport Christmas” and are looking forward to the very packed month of racing we have in June!

Top Story of the Week: What F1 is clamping down on with flexi-wings at the Spanish GP

Starting from this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, the FIA tells teams “No more bending the rules!”
See what I did there?

Technical Directive 018, TD018, is in response to concerns that some teams were pursuing designs that might reduce drag at high-speed, or even change the aero balance from low to high-speed, and TD018 specifically would “introduce either new or more challenging load-deflection tests for the front wing.”

The new flexibility tests will see vertical loads of 100kg applied symmetrically to both sides of the car, with deflection of no more than 10mm permitted. When the vertical load is applied to just one side of the wing, the deflection must be no more than 20mm.

Though the FIA changes to front-wing testing were decided in January, they delayed the introduction of the tests to give teams more time to find loopholes, I mean, give teams more time to adapt their wing designs.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was quoted “The MCL39’s performance does not come from one single area, but it’s instead a cumulative effect from the philosophy of the car.”

Don’t expect any crazy changes in the grid order just yet 😉
